The setting in this painting and its title appear to be derived from the ‘Palais Bulles’ or ‘Bubble Palace,’ a large house on the French Riviera, near Cannes, which was designed by the renowned architect Antti Lovag. This house, with its smooth, curved façade and its rounded windows and passageways creates a strange sense of discomfort to the viewer of this piece. Despite there being no corners or sharp edges, there is plenty of space to hide. The figure whose arms, legs and torso can be seen behind the palm tree seems to be an intruder in this setting. He watches the woman in the foreground, but because we cannot see his face, his purpose and intention are not discernible. The woman looks directly at the viewer, but her expression is also difficult to read. She seems to have stopped in her tracks; perhaps she is posing or taking a moment to think, perhaps she is conveying a message to the viewer.
