As with many paintings over the years, this and Moorish Wall are based on words or passages from the works of James Joyce, particularly Ulysses. The words or passages are written on the surface and blocked out with colour and shape in an abstract “representation” of the subject. The title is then rewritten discreetly on the edge of the painting. Maltman captures both the romantic chaos and the formality of the text.
