‘Lógos’ is the title of this painting, and the text detail on the girl’s t-shirt. It is a philosophical term derived from the Greek language, which describes thought or reason expressed through words. The girl in this painting poses assertively, her feet apart and arms out, with one lifted to her chest. Her stance is confident and self-assured. She looks at the viewer directly, giving the impression that she is comfortable with the viewer looking back at her. Much like her t-shirt implies, she seems expressive and willing to share her thoughts. However, the girl’s headphones suggest that she is on some level tuning out, reducing how much input she receives from the world around her, or controlling what the input will be. She is what Wolfgang Dieter Bauer describes as a ‘multimedia’ girl; she is cool and adaptable, and she moves through life with the conventions, technologies and rapid changes of the twenty-first century. Placed against a pink background, this composition could be set anywhere; the space is not identifiable. The anonymity of the setting may be seen as a parallel to the girl’s own control of her surroundings through the headphones; perhaps she decided that the background should be pink.
