In this strange and unsettling piece, the painter Wolfgang Dieter Bauer presents an image of himself. Looking ahead, standing in front of the well-known Hotel Fasano in Sao Paulo, the painted image of the painter assumes a serious pose, perhaps aware that he is being observed. He stands in a space of evident luxury, with a brand-new car whose surface reflects the lettering on the hotel building. The background appears symmetrical and tidy, however, the symmetry is broken by a rabbit in a suit. The rabbit’s face is barely visible in the shadow of the setting. The rabbit seems to watch the painter whilst silently maintaining its distance. The painter in the piece is being observed from two perspectives: that of the viewer and that of the rabbit. Part of Dieter Bauer’s series ‘In Dreams,’ this piece prompts the viewer to consider the dichotomies between dream and reality, and the dreamlike quality of specific moments in reality.
