The subject of the composition is a young girl, probably no older than six or seven, holding a revolver. She holds it confidently with both hands, keeping one finger just above the trigger. It is not clear what she is pointing the revolver towards, whether she is threatening or being threatened. She stands in front of a screen or tent, painted in a light orange-pink, and adjacent to the screen there is a barrier of barbed wire. The incongruity between the young child and the objects around her allows one to wonder about the context of the painting. It is not clear whether the girl holds a real revolver or a toy, whether she has pulled the trigger or not, whether the barbed wire is real or imagined, but the scene suggests that something violent is taking place. The viewer is presented with a partial narrative, but the full story is a mystery. Whilst there are some clues on the canvas, they do not seem to lead to a definitive answer.
